Reminder for 3Ls: SJC Rule 3:03 Certification

3L Request Deadline: February 15th

Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) Rule 3:03 sets forth the process for a law student to participate in court proceedings on behalf of the Commonwealth or indigent parties. Those who intern for a public sector entity during their 3L year may request 3:03 certification so long as the petition is submitted at least 90 days before graduation (which is February 22nd). Please allow sufficient time if you plan to apply for 3:03 certification. All requests must be in to Student Services by February 15th to make sure they are in on time.

The SJC will not approve first time 3:03 certifications after graduation and many prosecutor and public defender offices will require you to be certified as a condition for post-graduate employment. To qualify you must have successfully completed either Trial Practice or Evidence and must have a current qualifying placement. The SJC will not allow petitions to work for private sector employers.

If you would like Student Services to file a petition for you, please contact Sharon Blumenstock (blumenst@bc.edu) by February 15th with the following information: where you are currently working (& address) and your supervisor’s name, position, address, telephone and Board of Bar Overseers registration number.
